Simple Thanksgiving table decor doesn’t have to break the budget or send you out running to ten different stores in search of just the right gourds, candles or napkins. A quick hunt around your house for what you already have, and a few added pieces, plus a little DIY will give you and your family a beautiful table to gather around and consider all the things for which you are thankful. Add to the celebration, scripture and prayer that helps you focus on what you’re truly thankful for and it makes for a very special shared meal.

I have to admit that decorating the table is not usually something I think about long before Thanksgiving day. But, this year I’ll be spending Thanksgiving at my daughter’s house, and it got me thinking about what I would do if I were home. Maybe I’ll even leave some room in my suitcase for a few goodies to add to her table when I get there . . .

Don’t skip over this day of reflection
Have you noticed how over the years stores start bringing out Christmas decorations just before Halloween? Then on November 1st, the shelves are cleared of most of the fall decor and Christmas decor takes over. I hate to see the minimizing of such a beautiful and important holiday. Thanksgiving is a day to reflect on the things for which we are truly grateful. Although I often thank Jesus for many things, having a day to share with family and friends that is all about thankfulness is important and very meaningful on an even larger scale.
The saints modeled thanksgiving
There are so many passages in the Bible that model a thankful heart. I’m certain that the circumstances when these words were penned weren’t always times of smooth sailing in the lives of the writers. They were often facing persecution, hunger, thirst and even jail time. But their hearts overflowed with thanks to God for who He is and what He’s done, and for their friends who shared their life with them. What an encouragement it is for us to do the same. So, with this in mind and looking ahead to Thanksgiving Day, I’ve put together some table decor ideas and other things to help you celebrate!

Put something meaningful by each plate
Use these place cards at each table setting. I’ve made an “I am Thankful For” set of cards where you can either write the guest’s name on it, or they can write what they’re thankful for. You could even tie the place card with a little twine and a small pencil and ask them to fill it out front or back.
There are also twelve scripture place cards with verses to shift our focus to the spiritual side of a grateful heart. Put one at each plate and have guests share their scripture or use it as a prayer starter before your meal.
God bless you and yours and have a most wonderful Thanksgiving!
